This report authored by CEDEC highlights findings of two surveys conducted in the Greater Montreal Area this year, which identified employment needs and challenges of mature workers. The findings suggest that this is a complex group presenting numerous life situations and barriers who often feel frustrated because they face challenges they have little or no control over. Among the most prevalent obstacles to finding employment mentioned by the respondents were:
- Poor French language speaking and/or writing skills
- Age discrimination, becoming most acute around the age of 50
- Little knowledge about available employability-related resources in their areas
Recent immigrants, mature workers living outside the Greater Montreal Area and the older segment of the mature workers are facing the obstacles enumerated above in a more pronounced way. Nonetheless, many respondents felt that their skills were very relevant to current labour conditions, but were very willing to undergo further training if it meant enhancing the possibility of gaining employment.
The report is available in English and French.
