Comptoir Urbain is a Montreal retail store and café offering cruelty-free cosmetics and vegan products. Initially founded by Loren Dafniotis and a friend, Loren is now the sole proprietor. Comptoir Urbain’s mission is to educate the community about cruelty-free alternatives, and raise awareness and encourage conscious consumerism while playing an active role in promoting environmental sustainability.
As a startup, Loren and her partner needed to promote the business and get some publicity, but didn’t have a budget. After a free assessment by a CEDEC Small Business Support certified GrowthWheel® advisor, she used worksheets from the tool to develop a publicity plan. Additionally, her CEDEC SBS advisor provided a list of social media tools as well as a few tactics which she implemented immediately given that these platforms are free and far-reaching. Her business has since grown from a small cosmetics counter to a large space in Notre-Dame-de-Grace and now includes a café, workshops and acts as a pick-up point for Montreal’s famous rooftop garden, Lufa Farms.
